SriLankan Airlines

  • Nach fast achtjähriger Pause, als im Januar 1993 der letzte Flug der Air Lanka stattfand, wurde im Jahr 2000 auf der Internationalen Tourismus Börse-ITB in Berlin offiziell die Wiederaufnahme einer regulären Charterflugverbindung nach Sri Lanka bekanntgegeben.

  • Die zwischenzeitlich als SriLankan Airlines neu formierte Airline erschien dann am 30.Oktober des Jahres mit dem Airbus A330-200 (4R-ALF) auf ihrem Erstflug aus Colombo. Mit einem Zwischenstopp in Dubai/UAE wurde diese Route dann zwei Mal in der Woche beflogen.

  • Dieser Dienst musste jedoch eingestellt werden, als am 24. Juli 2001 eine Gruppe von tamilischen Rebellen den Flughafen von Colombo zum Ziel eines Terroranschlags machte und mehrere Flugzeuge der Gesellschaft dabei zerstört wurden.

  • Zum einen wegen der nun fehlenden Flugzeuge, aber auch durch den Einbruch des Touristikgeschäfts, fand somit der letzte Flug am 23. Juli 2001 mit dem A330-200 (4R-ALA) statt.

  • With the last flight of Air Lanka in January 1993 and after nearly eight years of absence, it was then in the year of 2000 as the intention was made official at the International Tourism Fair called ITB in Berlin, to restart a regular charter service to Sri Lanka in the same year.

  • And so the newly formed and renamed airline was operating its first visit on routing Colombo-Dubai-Berlin/SXF with a Airbus A330-200 (4R-ALF) on the 30th. of October.

  • However, this twice weekly service came to a close end after the Tamil terrorists attack at the Colombo airport on July 24th. 2001, which resulted in the loss of nearly the half of the fleet of SriLankan Airlines.

  • This also led to sinking tourism rates and the last flight to Berlin was enforced on July 23rd. 2001 with the A330-200 registered as 4R-ALA.
